Debit Card vs Credit Card: When to Use Which

CardWiz Team · 7 Jul 2026 · English

Both swipe the same way, but they behave very differently.

Credit card wins for

  • Rewards & offers: Most cashback, points and instant discounts run on credit cards.
  • Safety: Fraud liability is easier to dispute; your own money isn't blocked while you fight a charge.
  • Building credit: On-time credit-card bills build your CIBIL score. Debit spends don't.

Debit card wins for

  • Discipline: You can only spend what you have — no bill, no interest.
  • ATM cash & small daily spends where no offer applies.

The trap to avoid

Credit is only "free" if you pay the full statement every month. Carry a balance and interest (often 30%+ a year) erases every reward.

Rule of thumb: put rewarded, disputable spends on credit and clear the bill in full; use debit when you'd otherwise overspend.
